Position: Urban Farm Hand (Entry Level)

Specialization: Local, Organic Indiana Farming

Location: Crooked Creek Farm (Formerly Fitness Farm)

Industry: Urban Farming/Non-Profit

Reports To: Urban Farm Manager

 

Job Description:

We are seeking a dedicated and passionate person to join our urban farm. As a farm hand you will be responsible for the daily upkeep and cultivation of the urban farm under the direction of the urban farm manager. You will be focused on producing high-quality organic crops, promoting sustainable agricultural practices and livestock management. This entry-level position can be promoted to lead farm hand.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with day-to-day operations of the farm, including planting, irrigation, fertilization, pest and weed control, harvesting, washing and packing of organic produce.

  • Help ensure farm adheres to organic certifications standards and practices.

  • Help monitor and manage plant health, including disease and pest control, using organic and environmentally friendly methods.

  • Assist with water conservation practices.

  • Help maintain accurate records of crops, crop yields, expenses and other relevant data.

  • Attending training to stay updated on the latest advancements and best practices in the organic farming and urban farming agriculture field. *

  • Assist with daily feeding and cleaning of livestock on the farm. To include chickens, pigs, goats, rabbits, bees and cows.

  • Assist with greenhouse upkeep and crop rotation.

  • Must work well as a team member or alone, in all-weather conditions.

  • Must have a smart phone for access to farm management apps.

  • Some weekend/holiday work will be required.

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Prior work/internship in the agriculture industry is preferred, but not required. We are willing to train the right candidate.

  • Thorough working knowledge of larger equipment, such as dump truck, tractor, and workhorse, as well as commercial mowers

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing conditions and situations.

  • Possess organizational and time management skills.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Passion for promoting sustainable agriculture and local food systems.

  • Thorough working knowledge of hand tools, power tools, chain saws and small garden equipment.

  • Must have a valid driver license. Must have a reliable form of transportation to work.

  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. unassisted.
