At Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South , our Club staff members wear many hats – they’re teachers, coaches, mentors, community superheroes, and all-around awesome ambassadors of fun and learning! They’re not just responsible for unlocking the doors to our Clubs; they’re unlocking doors to new worlds and incredible possibilities for kids and communities all over our service region. Since 2021, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro South has owned and operated a fleet of Freight Farms hydroponic greeneries at our Brockton and Taunton Clubhouses and Camp Riverside property as part of an innovative multipronged initiative aimed at providing nutritional assistance, educational STEM programming, and promoting community engagement. In short, our Freight Farms are hydroponic gardens outfitted inside retrofitted shipping containers. Unlike traditional farms, the Freight Farms' plants grow vertically indoors without soil, getting nutrients from an enriched water solution and energy from powerful LED lights. Each greenery is capable of growing lettuces, leafy greens, herbs, root vegetables, edible flowers, and many other crops, and supports over 13,000 plants at once – replacing a 2-acre traditional farm and operating on just 5 gallons of water per week! All greens and other produce grown in the farms are utilized directly by BGCMS within our Kids Cafe healthy meals program which provides every Club member with a nutritious dinner each weeknight, distributed free of cost to Club families in need during our Monthly Markets, or donated to more than a dozen food pantries in Greater Brockton and Taunton!
