The U.S. Trade Compliance Consultant is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the import and export trade compliance strategy to ensure adherence to U.S. Customs, FDA, and global trade regulations. 

This role requires strong cross-functional collaboration with manufacturing plants, regional trade compliance counterparts, and strategic partners to facilitate smooth international trade operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Trade Compliance & Regulatory Oversight
  • Oversee U.S. and Canadian import/export functions, ensuring compliance with Customs, FDA, and other regulatory authorities.
  • Collaborate with trade compliance teams in EMEA, Latin America, and Asia-Pacific to align global trade policies.

Guide teams on trade compliance issues, including:

  • HTS classification and export control classification numbers (ECCN)
  • Country of origin determination and customs valuation
  • End-use and end-user restrictions
  • Sanctions compliance and export license applications
  • FDA entry processes and reconciliations

Duty Savings & Trade Strategy

  • Identify and manage duty-saving opportunities through:
  • Free Trade Agreements (FTA), Foreign Trade Zones (FTZ), and duty deferral programs
  • Special programs like TIB (Temporary Importation Bond), IFE (Immediate Foreign Entry), and Chapter 98 classifications

Broker Management & Internal Controls

  • Manage Customs Brokerage relationships and oversee pre/post-entry compliance reviews.
  • Maintain and track trade compliance Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Conduct internal risk assessments and recommend process improvements.
  • Ensure data integrity related to tariff classification, country of origin, and declared customs values.

Compliance Monitoring & Training

  • Monitor regulatory updates and assess their impact on company operations.
  • Develop and deliver trade compliance training programs.
  • Act as a subject matter expert (SME) on global trade compliance and provide strategic guidance.

Required Qualifications & Experience:

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in Business, International Trade, Supply Chain, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).

Experience:

  • 8+ years of import/export compliance experience (medical device or pharmaceutical industry preferred).
  • In-depth knowledge of U.S. Customs regulations (CBP), FDA import requirements, EAR, ITAR, and trade agreements.

T echnical Skills:

  • Expertise in Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS), country of origin rules, and customs valuation.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
  • Experience with Oracle ERP/GTM preferred.

Certifications (Preferred but Not Required):

  • U.S. Customs Broker License or Certified Customs Specialist (CCS).
  • Lean Six Sigma and/or APICS certification.

Certification: Association for Supply Chain Management certification. , Certified Customs Specialist
