Tetra Tech, Inc. is currently seeking a Principal Marine Scientist in New England to support offshore development projects as well as to provide broad support and technical expertise in offshore project permitting, design, and development activities. Projects may be more frequent on the East Coast but may also be West Coast or international. This position will be filled as soon as the proper candidate is identified, and the scientist will start work as soon as is practical.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in discussions and negotiations with regulators, for written documents in support of authorizations and for client deliverables, contribute to all matters and tasks related to marine biology, benthic characterization and fisheries as they pertain to Tetra Tech’s offshore development project portfolio
  • Work with and manage current scientific staff in the support of a variety of offshore development projects for power transmission, pipelines, offshore renewables, and telecommunications cable clients
  • Research, compile, and interpret published literature, publicly available GIS datasets, and project-specific data to inform project-specific Critical Issues Analyses, Desktop Study documentation efforts, NEPA documents and client deliverables
  • Technical writing for reports, drafting or designing supporting figures and illustrations required
  • Scope, staff and manage field work associated with these scopes as required, either from the office or, if required, in the field
  • Assist with research and interpretation of international, federal, state and local regulations on a project-specific basis to assess project permitting feasibility and requirements for scientific scopes, as well as prepare environmental reports and permit applications
  • Analyze environmental data to highlight potential offshore construction risks
  • Have a working comprehension of GIS (e.g., ArcMap)
  • Have familiarity with the world of offshore stakeholders and be willing to accept some amount of liaison work with them (e.g., commercial mariners including and especially commercial fishermen)
  • Work alongside other technical leads among existing staff and participate in the preparation of proposals, budgets, and plans of work

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATION:

  • B.S. in Marine Science, Marine Fisheries or related degree required
  • M.S. or Ph. D. preferred
  • 5 years’ experience working on offshore projects strongly preferred (commercial, regulatory or academic)
  • Prior experience in marine or coastal planning and design, marine project permitting, and/or offshore development required
  • Must have outstanding written, verbal, and in-person communication skills to be used among internal technical experts, regulatory agencies, clients and others to facilitate achieving project goals
  • Willing to travel as required and likely work in the field as needed
  • Travel will be 5 - 15%
  • Strong understanding of geospatial analysis, integration, and data management required
  • Must possess solid, practical skills in office applications
