Job Description Summary

HFC presents an opportunity for a Temporary English Instructor, College Bound - The Hawk Advantage Summer Program
Provide the best experience possible for all students through facilitation of all educational curricula. Provide in-person and/or synchronous online non-credit instruction to incoming first-year college students of various ages to prepare them for college-level coursework. Have enthusiasm and a love for the subject matter. Make subject matter interesting for students and lessons a mixture of theory and practical work. Provide active and engaging instruction. Instruct groups of 20-30 students. Assist in the identification of teaching strategies to deliver lessons surrounding the following areas.
  • Reflective Writing
  • Evidence and Support
  • SQ3R (survey, question, read, recite, review)
  • Purposeful Writing versus Reporting
  • Genre and Purpose
  • Interconnectivity, Inferences, and Artifacts

Core Competencies and Qualifications


EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree


EXPERIENCE: A minimum of 3 years teaching experience in applicable subject matter.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Ability to form quick connections with students. Experience providing innovative instruction. Ability to keep students engaged. Ability to set expectations for and enforce appropriate student behavior.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities including but not limited to


  • Implement all program curricula during classes, facilitate engaging student discussions, generate intellectual curiosity, and ensure that all educational goals are met during each phase of the program. Create a safe and stimulating learning environment for all students.
  • Design, prepare and deliver dynamic lessons and instructional materials that engage students.
  • Provide opportunities that challenge students to think critically
  • Create a developmentally appropriate, positive, inclusive, and safe learning environment.
  • Monitor progress to ensure all students are demonstrating high rates of growth.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of students' progress and development.
  • Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse social-emotional, cultural, economic and ability backgrounds.
  • Complete paperwork and submit completed paperwork and program materials in a timely fashion.
  • Follow the program schedule.
  • Set a positive and enthusiastic example for students. Establish positive connections with each student.
  • Attend staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Work closely, cooperatively, and amicably with all staff members.
  • Perform other duties as designated by the program leadership.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the Program Lead.

Additional Information


Dates: (Priority will be given to candidates who can commit to both sessions. Sessions are dependent on student enrollment.)
Session I: Monday - Thursday, July 8 - July 25, 2024
Session II: Monday - Thursday, July 29 - August 15, 2024
(12 hours of in-person professional development is also required between May 20 and June 28 for all instructors; see below for details)

SCHEDULE/HOURS:
Candidates must be available, in-person, for 12 hours of professional development prior to program start, to be scheduled between May 20 and June 28, 2024. Specific dates to be determined.


In-Person Instruction:
During summer sessions, schedule will be Monday - Thursday, 9:30 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. with an additional 30 minutes for weekly staff meetings.


Stipend (includes professional development)
1 session - $1,440
Both sessions - $2,340


Virtual Live Instruction:
During summer sessions, schedule will be Monday - Thursday, 5:15 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. with an additional 30 minutes for weekly staff meetings.


Stipend (includes professional development)
1 session - $1,440
Both sessions - $2,340

Candidates can apply for both in-person and virtual positions. Stipends will be appropriately adjusted related to professional development.
