Position Summary

Thermo Fisher's Analytical Instruments Group (AIG) provides complex technologies to analyze virtually any sample type including proteins, their structure, and inorganic materials at atomic resolution. As well as identification of elemental and chemical composition in materials. Our mass spectrometry, electron microscopy and spectroscopic technologies have been crucial in advancing industrial processes such as lithium-ion battery manufacturing. As well as for answering foundational questions in the life sciences.

In addition to patent preparation and prosecution, this role will support robust patent portfolio development and sound risk mitigation procedures via invention mining, freedom-to-operate, and competitive analysis. The successful candidate will be a self-starter who can bring new ideas to the team. They will rapidly develop an understanding of technology as well as business strategy. As Thermo Fisher grows in line with its 2030 vision, the ideal candidate will bring insights regarding successful patent practice/process improvement to the department.

Locations: This is a site-based role open at the Hillsboro, OR; Pittsburgh, PA; or Morrisville/RTP, NC locations where Thermo Fisher is building multi-disciplinary legal teams that support multiple businesses. You'll be part of a dynamic environment with the opportunity to collaborate with legal colleagues. You will expand your skills through seeing different businesses and how they operate!

Travel: Some amount of domestic and European travel will be required

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and prosecute high-quality, commercially-relevant patent applications.
  • Work in partnership with R&D teams to Identify and capture high-value IP.
  • Assess patentability and freedom-to-operate to counsel R&D and business colleagues.
  • Manage and improve IP processes including innovation tracking and monitoring competitor IP activity.

Qualifications
  • Registered to practice in good standing before the US Patent & Trademark Office with 5+ years drafting and prosecuting high-value patents with a track record of success.
  • Advanced degree (Masters or PHD) in a field related to AIG technologies, preferably in physics or engineering, strongly preferred. Minimum of Bachelors required.
  • Practical experience with spectroscopy, microscopy and/or particle detection technologies will be an asset
  • Proven ability to perform complex IP analyses including product clearances, and prior art searches.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
