A team oriented, energetic, self-motivated individual with an engineering or construction background and a desire to learn. The applicant should have strong organizational and communication skills as well as an understanding of the complexities of planning, design and managing construction work. The position requires individuals comfortable with learning and working independently. The ideal applicant should have a background in building, designing, and/or administering construction projects (preferably civil work and underground utilities), outdoor recreation facility construction, and/or engineering principles and practices. The ideal applicant has knowledge from working within the construction industry, i.e., contractors and professional consultants, designing and building projects, solving disputes, and understanding how to represent the Owner's interests throughout the design and construction process to deliver a quality project on time and within budget. The Engineering Division is a tight-knit team of a Chief Engineer and seven project managers who collaborate regularly with the Architectural Division, which includes a Chief Architect and four project managers. This position is unique in that, while housed within the Engineering Division, it focuses specifically on Parks & Recreation capital projects. The selected applicant will work closely with Parks & Recreation staff and leadership to plan and deliver projects that enhance community spaces and recreational facilities throughout Juneau. From trails and playgrounds to sports facilities and park infrastructure, the work directly supports CBJ's mission to provide accessible and high-quality recreation opportunities for all. In addition, the applicant will also collaborate with primarily local design and construction professionals to execute projects accurately, efficiently and expediently. Our team manages over $40 million in Capital Projects annually, ranging from small improvements valued under $100,000 to large-scale infrastructure projects exceeding $2,000,000. While the work is executed independently, the applicant will benefit from a strong, collaborative support network of team members who are committed to sharing their expertise for the success of the project.
This position works Monday through Friday, 8:00am 4:30pm. Your office would be located in downtown Juneau on the 3rd floor of the Marine View Apartment Building.
This position plays a critical role in shaping and enhancing the Juneau Parks & Open Space System by overseeing the planning, design, and construction of a wide range of public-use projects that support recreation, wellness, and community connection. These projects include trails, parks, playgrounds, athletic facilities, and natural open spaces. You will work closely with the Parks & Recreation Department to deliver impactful, community-centered construction projects that improve quality of life and support long-term environmental and recreational goals.
Key Responsibilities:
Education: Graduation from high school or the equivalent.
Experience: Three (3) years experience practicing engineering or journey level construction experience in one or more of the following fields: engineering design, drafting, surveying, inspection, construction management, materials testing, plan review, plan interpretation, or construction document preparation.
Substitution: Post-secondary education from an accredited college in engineering, construction management or similar field may substitute for the required experience. A valid Drivers' License at time of appointment and for continued employment.
Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts degree from an accredited college in Engineering, Land Surveying, or Construction Management or a similar course of study. Progressively responsible experience in the practice of engineering, or journey level construction in one or more of the following fields: engineering design, drafting, surveying, inspection, construction management, materials testing, plan review, plan interpretation, or construction documents preparation may be substituted on a year for year basis. Successful completion of either the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) Examination may be substituted for the education. A valid Drivers' License at time of appointment and for continued employment.
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college in Engineering, Land Surveying, Construction Management, or similar course of study. Two (2) years of experience equivalent to an Engineering or Architectural Assistant II with the City of Juneau. Progressively responsible construction management, engineering or land surveying experience may be substituted for the education on a year for year basis. A valid Drivers' License at time of appointment and for continued employment.
Alaska state law requires incumbents to be licensed as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Land Surveyor (LS). A valid Drivers' License at time of appointment and for continued employment. Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.
