SUMMARY:

Directs and coordinates activities and workers engaged in operating the Museum. Coordinate fundraising events and campaigns. Formulates and interprets administrative policies of the institution. Serve as the primary spokesperson for the institution and the liaison to the media, the community, and the local government. Work with Museum Board to carry out the Museum’s strategic plan and goals. Oversee the administration and operation of all aspects of the Museum, and ensure adherence to professional standards for exhibition, programs, and communications. Research and develop new permanent and temporary exhibits, educational and interpretive programs. Manage and supervise the care of collection, historic buildings, and records by ensuring accurate and consistent cataloging, artifact processing procedures, storage methods, and conservation methods. Plan, develop, implement, and oversee all aspects of museum educational and adult programming. Coordinate school group and volunteer schedules. Actively seek, negotiate, and contract with educators, demonstrators, craft persons, lecturers, musicians, performers, and others to fill Museum public programming calendar.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Prepares and monitors Museum budget.
  • Engages in fundraising events and promotions for the Museum.
  • Represents the Museum at public events and works as a liaison with the media.
  • Works with Museum’s Board to reach Museum goals and strategic plans.
  • Manage and supervise the care, study, and records of the collections by ensuring proper storage, handling, conservation, and exhibition techniques.
  • Manage and supervise the collection records by ensuring accurate and consistent cataloging and artifact processing procedures.
  • Manage care and conservation of Museum’s historic structures.
  • Researches, develops, and produces permanent and temporary exhibits.
  • Recruits, trains, and supervises docents, volunteers, and student interns.
  • Creates, coordinates, and gives tours and programs to children and adults.
  • Performs other duties as required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervise one full time employee, seasonal employees, volunteers, and interns. Responsibilities include interviewing, training, planning, assigning, appraising performance, and problem solving.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Graduated from an accredited four year university or college with a degree in Museum/Non-profit Administration, History, Museum Studies, Public Education, or Administration. Related education and related experience may be substituted on an equal basis

COMPUTER SKILLS:

Must thoroughly understand and be able to use advanced computer program skills to include the Microsoft Office Suite, word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, budget, and desktop publishing programs. Knowledge of Perfect Museum Software a plus.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to understand, give, and follow oral and written instructions; read, analyze, and interpret correspondence, reports, and other general and specialized data; respond to citizen queries by telephone, in writing or electronically; research and prepare reports and correspondence; communicate effectively with peers, supervisors, and citizens; take and transcribe minutes, must be able to completely prepare correspondence using appropriate business writing style; possess an extensive knowledge of English language rules, spelling, punctuation, and style.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Ability to apply basic accounting principles and practices.

REASONING ABILITY:

Apply principles of logical thinking to define and solve problems; exercise judgment and discretion with regard to city and department policies and procedures; work with limited supervision; ability to carry out detailed instructions and deal with problems in a standardized, unexpected, and unsupervised situations; logically schedule work for office staff; apply innovative ideas to problem solving. Ability to maintain confidentiality of information accumulated in the course of employment. Must maintain professional appearance.

OFFICE SKILLS:

Ability to operate modern office equipment including calculator, fax, copier, computer, typewriter, and video projector.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Individual would need to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: making observations, reading, writing, and communicating with others.

  • The employee regularly works inside a typical office. The employee may perform some duties outdoors while conducting official business and commuting between offices. The indoor noise level is low to moderate. This is a high stress position with constant interruptions and inquiries. Employee will be required to attend some evening and weekend meetings.
