GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES The GED (General Education Development) teacher is responsible for a multi-level class of adult learners. The position is responsible for instructing a cohort of adult learners in reading, writing, and mathematical content knowledge to improve basic skills and/or prepare for a GED® credential.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Essential Job Functions The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. - Planning and implementation of instructional activities for a cohort of adult learners preparing for a GED®, Career.
- Readiness Certificate (CRC), Digital Literacy, professional soft-skill credentials, and an industry certification at an accelerated pace in partnership with the Virginia Community College System.
- Administer assessments in accordance with vendor guidelines and VADOE policies.
- Collaborate with community college staff to plan a contextualized curriculum.
- Develop program timeline and weekly instructional schedule for learner persistence and capstone project.
- Maintain accurate data and student records using the VADOE Adult Student Profile Document (ASPD).
- Participates in staff development activities, staff meetings and curriculum development activities as required.
- Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Regional Manager or other appropriate administrator.
- Performs related work as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge/Skills/Abilities - Must possess the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Must possess excellent organizational, planning, and human relations skills.
- Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with adult learners, specialists, program managers, school administration, and business/community partner agencies.
- Strong Math and Science background preferred. Individual must possess knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment appropriate for instructing adult learners in obtaining a GED®, Career Readiness Certificate, and Digital Literacy credentials.
- Must demonstrate a commitment and ability to serve a diverse community, including low-income families and English language learners.
- Self-motivated and able to work at a standalone site.
- Ability to manage and maintain a professional classroom, providing instruction to adult participants whose basic skills are below the twelfth-grade level.
- Possess working skills in the use of technology to deliver Distance Education instruction, communicate via email and teach basic computer skills to the adult learner.
- Knowledge of State and Federal laws and regulations governing instructional programming.
- Knowledge of basic school district work policies and guidelines.
Education/ Certifications/Experience Bachelor's degree in education or a related field. Experience teaching adult students is preferred. or related field; supplemented by three (3) to five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience in the curriculum and instructional programming, within a similar educational institution, and current knowledge of relative Federal, State and Local laws.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public using the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Frequent sitting, walking, standing, bending, grasping, fingering, repetitive motion, and reaching. Occasional stooping and kneeling. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds rarely. Requires timely and regular adherence to established work schedules.
