JOB PURPOSE:

Reporting to the Department Manager, the Exhibitions Manager in the Department of Art & Art History will collaborate with colleagues to conceive, organize and mount changing exhibitions of varying scope within the department’s various exhibition spaces, and oversee programming including screenings, performances, and other educational events in Oshman Hall. S/he will work closely with the Gallery Committee, department faculty and staff, student, emerging and professional artists and curators, other university departments, and Stanford Arts. S/he manages one direct report and oversees a number of student assistants.

CORE DUTIES:

Conceive, research, develop and collaborate with colleagues to organize and mount changing exhibitions of varying scope; develop related programming, including lectures, symposia and other educational programs. Oversee multiple simultaneous exhibitions varying in size and scope in two formal galleries and a variety of other departmental spaces. Manage Gallery Committee, oversee exhibitions schedule, recommend programming, advise on gallery policies, oversee RFPs and manage submissions. Oversee one full-time preparatory/production assistant; recruit, hire, train, and supervise student gallery attendants. Develop, prepare and maintain exhibition and program budgets, serve as a liaison to the University community, other institutions and the public. In collaboration with Stanford Arts, coordinate programming for Oshman Hall presented by units outside the department. Review proposals, oversee calendar, produce quotes, manage production.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience: Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of five years of related experience or a combination of education and relevant experience. Advanced degree preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Excellent interpersonal skills and professionalism to interact with a wide range of people at different levels of an organization. Exceptional verbal and written communication, demonstrated presentation skills. Proven ability to effectively and efficiently manage multiple priorities, with competing deadlines. Demonstrated proficiency in MS Office Suite and database management applications. Demonstrated project management skills. Demonstrated ability to build effective long-term relationships both internally and externally and the ability to clearly articulate and advocate the Department’s goals.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Frequently perform desk based computer tasks, seated work and use light/ fine grasping. Occasionally stand, walk, and write by hand, lift, carry, push pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

May work extended or non-standard hours, weekends and holidays based on business needs. Occasional local and overnight travel may be required. May work in areas with exposure to dust, paint, chemicals and other toxins.
