Job Description

Summary: 

The Director of Student Health Services at UTMB provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for the delivery of comprehensive health services to students. This role supports UTMB's mission to improve health through education, research, and patient care by fostering a safe, inclusive, and health-promoting campus environment.

Scope: Operating unit and the various schools.

Responsibilities:

Leadership & Administration

  • Direct all aspects of student health services, including clinical care, health education, and wellness initiatives.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures in alignment with UTMB’s strategic goals and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage departmental budget, staffing, and resource allocation to ensure efficient and effective service delivery.

Clinical Oversight

  • Supervise licensed healthcare professionals and ensure high standards of care and compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, and Texas Medical Board regulations.
  • Coordinate with UTMB’s broader health system and external providers for referrals and emergency care.
  • Oversee immunization compliance, communicable disease response, and preventive health screenings.

Health Promotion & Education

  • Lead campus-wide health education campaigns focused on mental health, substance use, sexual health, and chronic disease prevention.
  • Collaborate with academic departments and student affairs to integrate wellness into student life.

Compliance & Risk Management

  • Ensure adherence to UT System and state health regulations, including FERPA and Title IX as applicable.
  • Oversees the maintenance of the Electronic Medical Record system (EPIC); ensure confidentiality of information in compliance with FERPA and HIPAA requirements.
  • Serves as department liaison with other UTMB offices and external agencies.
  • Participate in university committees related to student wellness, emergency preparedness, and behavioral intervention.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's in Nursing or Physician's Assistant plus four (4) years of health care management experience.
  • Current RN license in Texas or Physician's Assistance License.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant certification preferred.
  • Experience in student health, health education or wellness programs.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to plan, organize, set and accomplish goals
  • Demonstrated leadership background.
  • Experience in budget development and control, financial management, contract negotiation and development.
  • Customer service focus.
  • Experience in nursing and health care management, including quality improvement.
