Data Scientist - Summer Internship

The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Hydrological Sciences Lab is seeking a motivated Summer Intern Data Scientist to join the Hydrological Science Lab at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. This position is related to a congressionally mandated study aimed at demonstrating the value of the Upper Mississippi River Basin (UMRB) in-situ soil moisture network for enhancing climate and hydrological applications. The scientist will explore how in-situ data can be used to adjust the SMAP (Soil Moisture Active Passive) satellite data assimilation, thereby improving modeled hydrological states and fluxes to characterize fire-prone landscapes.

Responsibilities

The intern will be responsible for processing soil moisture data, ensuring quality control, performing statistical analysis, and converting soil moisture data into a format readable by the Land Information System. This internship is ideal for individuals who are passionate about environmental science, eager to apply their data analysis skills in a real-world setting, and looking to make a significant impact on environmental research and policy.

Required Skills

Background or Pending Degree in Earth Science, Computer Science, or Engineering, preferably with a focus in hydrological sciences, and a proficiency in data processing, and computer programming.

The position requires a U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Resident.
