Summary:
- The main function of a Linguist is to determine speech data needs and setting strategic vision for data based model and product improvements.
Job Responsibilities:
- Provide linguistic expertise in the areas of phonetics, phonology, lexicography, dialectology, and NLP.
- Design and conduct experiments for evaluating transcription quality.
- Develop manual and automated processes for multiple concurrent projects including ensuring high-quality label alignments, prosodic classification, POS identification and disambiguation, targeted modeling data, and user feedback.
- Create and perfect text normalization and inverse text normalization processes.
- Manage lexical and phrasal transcriptions and related metadata.
- Analyze system metrics such as user opinion, lexicon transcription coverage, and POS tagger performance and remedy pain points.
Must-Have Skills:
- Phonetics and Phonology: Strong understanding of phonetics and phonology, with the ability to analyze speech data, design experiments, and develop manual and automated processes.
- Transcription and Annotation Systems: Knowledge of transcription and annotation systems such as SAMPA, IPA, and ToBI, with experience managing lexical and phrasal transcriptions and related metadata.
- Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in one of the following English dialects: British, Australian, Irish, Scottish, or other variants.
- Programming Skills: Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or SQL can be beneficial for a Linguist to automate processes, analyze data, and develop tools.
- NLP Expertise: Familiarity with Natural Language Processing (NLP) concepts and techniques, with experience working on speech data-based model and product improvements
Nice-to-Have Skills:
- Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to analyze system metrics, identify pain points, and develop solutions to improve speech data quality and model performance
- Data Visualization Skills: The ability to create visualizations using tools like Tableau, Power BI, or D3.js can help a Linguist to effectively communicate insights and findings to stakeholders.
- Project Management Experience: Experience with project management methodologies and tools can be helpful for a Linguist to manage multiple concurrent projects and ensure timely delivery of high-quality results.
Skills:
- Knowledge of phonetics, phonology, sociolinguistics, dialectology and other areas of linguistics.
- Ability to analyze waveforms and spectrograms.
- Knowledge of prescriptive writing and punctuation conventions for at least one language.
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
- Knowledge in transcription and annotation systems such as SAMPA, IPA and ToBI.
Minimum Years of Experience
Degrees/Certifications :
- Master's or Bachelor's degree in Linguistics (or related field)
- Relevant certifications in linguistics, language technology, or a related field are a plus.
