Description:
The Department of History at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, invites applications for the Bernadotte Schmitt Chair of Excellence. The department seeks an outstanding scholar of Nineteenth- or Twentieth-Century United States history. We anticipate making an appointment to begin in August 2025 at the rank of Full Professor or advanced Associate Professor. We are looking for applicants with a robust research record, teaching expertise in their area(s) of specialization, enthusiasm for mentoring graduate students, a strong record of service, and an interest in engaging with the intellectual life of the department and university. The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University. UTK is an R1 land-grant university, the flagship institution in the University of Tennesse system, and values engaged forms of research/scholarship/creative activity, teaching and service, and considers evidence of these commitments in the records of applicants. The city of Knoxville is a hidden gem with a beautiful and walkable downtown, a diverse music scene, active neighborhoods, unique restaurants, and a robust offering of outdoor and cultural activities. Qualifications:

Scholar of Nineteenth- or Twentieth-Century United States history. Must have Ph.D. at time of application. Associate Professors must have at least one book and Full Professors must have at least two books published with suitable presses.
