The City of Auburn is seeking a detail-oriented Police Hiring Background Investigator to join our team. This role is critical to maintaining the integrity of our hiring process by conducting thorough investigations into the backgrounds of police officer candidates. Position Overview The ideal candidate will have experience in law enforcement, background investigations, or human resources, with a deep understanding of confidentiality, compliance, and attention to detail. Conduct comprehensive background investigations for police officer candidates, including criminal history, credit checks, and prior employment verification. Review and analyze candidate applications, personal history statements, and other required documentation. Perform interviews with candidates, references, neighbors, employers, and educational institutions to gather relevant information. Prepare detailed, written reports summarizing investigative findings and recommendations. Collaborate with the Police Department to ensure timely processing of candidate backgrounds in accordance with Auburn Police hiring protocols. Maintain strict confidentiality and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent Valid driver’s license and ability to travel for interviews and fieldwork as needed Must pass a comprehensive background check and meet all City of Auburn employment requirements Prior experience in law enforcement, human resources, investigations, or a related field Familiarity with police background investigations or public safety hiring processes is preferred Strong attention to detail, investigative skills, and the ability to analyze complex information Excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and maintain confidentiality throughout the process Knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations Commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Team Auburn values diverse perspectives and life experiences, and welcomes applications from people who will help us consistently demonstrate the values of equity, respect, and partnership.
