Job Description and Duties

Per CCR 249.3, this job control may be used to fill subsequent vacancies.

This is a 12-month limited-term position which may be extended to a maximum of 24-months, or which may become permanent.

Under direction of the Branch Chief, the Assistant Agricultural Economist (AAE) will be assigned from six (6) to eight (8) less-complex programs and support the Senior and Associate Agricultural Economists in carrying out the responsibilities associated with proper administration and oversight of marketing programs. The AAE is expected to work both independently and in a team environment, analyze situations, exercise good judgment, take appropriate actions, and meet deadlines in performing duties relating to marketing programs.

The AAE must possess professional-level verbal and written communication skills necessary to carry out the responsibilities described below. The AAE must be able to analyze economic and marketing problems facing agriculture, assist in writing regulations that address these problems, assist in writing reports and making recommendations to the Branch Chief, and assist in the preparation of bill analyses regarding relevant legislation. The AAE represents the Secretary at routine meetings with program boards of directors and must advise such boards on procedural matters.

Working Conditions

• Ability to work under stressful conditions, including confrontational meetings with stakeholders, narrow time constraints, and inquiries from the Department’s Executive Office and other governmental entities (i.e., Legislature; Governor’s Office).

• Work primarily indoors. When at headquarters, work is in a shared office with a workstation including computer, monitor, keyboard, and telephone. Overnight travel (at least 20%) is required throughout the state at all times of the year. On travel status, employee will be attending meetings typically in hotels, marketing program offices, U.C. Cooperative Extension field offices, or Farm Bureau district office conference rooms. The job involves occasional tours of farms, processing plants, and university field days.

• Must be able to travel by the most efficient mode of transportation available, including travel by commercial air, rental car, or both. Must possess a valid California Driver’s License and a good driving record.

• Regular or recurring telework may occur as part of the incumbent’s ongoing regular schedule in accordance with CDFA’s Telework Policy.

Special Requirements

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:


A Master’s degree in Agricultural Economics or a closely related field, but will consider candidates who are nearing completion of their Master’s degree, or individuals with a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Economics or a closely related field who have work experience in agricultural economics, marketing, or a closely related field.

An ability to identify and analyze problems by applying principles of economics and marketing and provide sound guidance to the Department and agricultural leaders.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

An ability to work independently and be resourceful in gathering information necessary to meet objectives.

Experience in agriculture or a demonstrated interest in agriculture.

An ability to organize one’s time and workplace in order to meet deadlines.

Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Adobe Acrobat is required.

Proficiency in Microsoft Access and PowerPoint is helpful but not required.
